This is FAR from my first photo session with miss Millie. We did our first one just about two years ago for her son's 1st birthday / cakesmash / family session.
Since then, we have become close friends, and have also done a handful of photo sessions including: Maternity/Mommy&Me, gender reveal, Fresh 48, Santa session (2 years in a row), family, 2nd birthday, Valentines minis, plus the original birthday/cakesmash. It has truly been my honor to capture her family in so many ways and on so many occasions as they have grown and changed. I absolutely adore that she has chosen to stick by my side as I have grown as a photographer and artist as well!
But this session...it was a very special one to me. It was all about HER. Yes, of course the kids were there, because as a mom of littles that's impossible to escape, but it was all about making her feel and see herself for the beautiful, powerful, incredible woman & mother that she is. She has been through the RINGER recently, and I felt that she deserved to see herself the way I do!
Usually for my sessions I provide a Style Guide and then allow my client to select their outfits from there, though I am there to assist every step of the way and send all the ideas to. After all, I still want your session to feel like YOU, so I try not to take over entire creative control of this aspect so your style and personality can still shine through. However, with this session I told Millie I was taking full control. I selected the dress (which is a new addition to my Client Closet), and then coordinated the kids outfits as well. Now, Millie has told me time and time again that she is NOT a dress kind of girl and normally I am not going to be pushy. But, since we are close friends now and I had a very specific vision in mind, I put my foot down. And because she trusted my artistic eye, and also didn't want to fight me on it, she agreed. I think we can all agree that it made for her BEST session yet.
Of course, we are always at the mercy of the kiddos and their cooperation, and 3 years olds and newborns (especially together) can be some of the hardest to work with if they are not into it (and in this case, the 3 year old was NOT), but we did what we could, and captured some great ones of him before he opted to run wild through the field, which gave us the wonderful opportunity to capture images of just Millie and her baby girl.
All in all, I would count this session as a huge success! And now mama has some new artwork for her wall featuring both of her sweet babes, showcasing the infinite amount love she has for them.
"A mother's love is something that no one can explain ā It is made of deep devotion and of sacrifice and pain. It is endless and unselfish and enduring, come what may, For nothing can destroy it or take that love away. It is patient and forgiving when all others are forsaking, And it never fails or falters even though the heart is breaking." - Helen Steiner Rice
