What Props to Bring for Your Senior Session | Senior Photography Guide for Central Texas

When planning your senior session, there are so many ways to personalize your senior portrait experience, including the locations you choose, the outfits you wear, and the props you bring. While props are not necessary for your grad photos, they can do a beautiful job of helping to tell your story and make your portraits even more meaningful.

A senior session is a rare opportunity to truly shine, because for many people, it’s the first (and sometimes only) session that is completely centered around you. That makes it the perfect time to showcase not just who you are today, or who you’ve been over the past four years, but also where you come from and a glimpse of where you’re headed next.

PLEASE NOTE: all photos featured in this blog are taken by and are the exclusive property of Photography by Delaney, and may not be used or shared without permission.

With Delaney, you’ll receive an in-person design consultation so we can thoughtfully plan a session that reflects your story and vision. Even if you’re not sure what feels “unique” yet, we’ll create something meaningful together. Until then, here are some popular ideas to help spark inspiration.

Let's dig in!

Sports/School Activities

For many students, much of your high school experience may have been spent on a field, court, arena, or stage, and your senior photos should absolutely reflect that. Consider bringing anything that represents this important part of your journey, including what you wore (letterman jackets, uniforms, jerseys, shoes, or costumes), what you used (balls, bats, gloves, instruments, or other equipment), and the achievements you earned along the way (medals, trophies, buckles, banners, and awards).

Hobbies/Job

If you have hobbies or a part-time job outside of school, this can also be a wonderful opportunity to showcase where you spend your time and what you love to do. Taking senior photos on location at your job, in your uniform, or incorporating tools or items related to your work is a great way to personalize your session and tell more of your story.

Pets/Animals/Livestock

You have no idea how often I hear, “Can I bring my pet to my session?” and the answer is always an excited YES. While not all photographers are comfortable working with animals (always check with whoever you book with), I’ve grown up around all types of animals and spent years training and competing with them through 4-H and beyond, so they’re not only welcome in my sessions, but very much encouraged. Some of my favorite senior sessions have included horses, dogs, cats, livestock, FFA animal projects and other pets that have played an important role in a student’s high school experience.

Musical Instruments/Creative Interests

For many students, their instrument is almost part of their identity, so it only makes sense to include it. The same goes for any kind of creator—whether you paint, sculpt, build, craft, or work with your hands as a welder or artisan. These are all incredible ways to showcase what makes you during your high school experience unique and personal.

Vehicles

Another piece of many students’ identity—especially, though not limited to my guys—is their vehicle. Your first car is something many people love to look back on, remember, and one day show their future children, so it can be a meaningful addition to your session. From trucks and cars to motorcycles, ATVs, tractors, and classic cars, if you’ve spent years with it, it absolutely deserves a place in your senior photos.

Books/Bible/Meaningful Keepsakes

Some of the most meaningful props are heirlooms or sentimental items from childhood. From your first teddy bear to favorite toys, old photographs, well-loved books, or other keepsakes, these items help tell the story of where you started—and often create especially meaningful images for parents who still see their little one in them. Keepsakes don’t have to be from childhood, either. Many seniors choose to bring books, their Bible, or meaningful items they’ve collected throughout their high school years. Some also use this opportunity to honor and remember a loved one who has passed by including a sentimental item that represents them.

Family & Friends

Though senior sessions are always designed to highlight the graduate first and foremost, it is not uncommon for seniors and/or their parents to use this opportunity to capture a few family photos or images with loved ones. For many, this may be one of the last chances to have professional portraits together before the next chapter begins, so I always make time when possible to preserve those memories.

Academic Achievements

From graduation regalia (cap, gown, tassel, stole, and cords) to class rings, diplomas, awards, and any other items that represent your achievements, these are arguably the most traditional props to include in a senior session.

What comes next?

Senior sessions aren’t just about reflecting on the past four years--they’re also an opportunity to celebrate what comes next. Whether you’re heading to college, trade school, starting a career, or joining the family business, we can find a meaningful way to highlight your next step. From college t-shirts and pennants to tools of the trade and more, it’s a great way to give a nod to where you’re going.

Decorative Props

Alongside personalized, meaningful props that tell your story, there are also props that are used more for decoration. These can include balloons, florals, confetti, signs, smoke bombs, champagne pop (for college students) and similar items. I recommend using these sparingly, as they tend to be less personal than items tied to your experiences and achievements, and the focus should always remain on you and the story you’re telling.

This list is by no means comprehensive, and I can almost guarantee every senior has something personal that could be added to their session that isn’t listed here. That’s exactly what we’ll explore during your design consultation. Your session will be unique--and so will your props, locations, and outfits.

If you are an incoming grad (or their parent) and you're ready to start designing the session of your dreams, now is the perfect time to start planning. Let's create photos that matter, together.
